Foreground elements

I decided to add  the deer in the foreground and this is what I did to figure out the best placement for them. I painted them roughly on a transparent sheet and moved it along the painting to decide the best  spot for them.

Smooth canvas prep work

I prefer a smooth canvas, so I treat the canvas with 2-3 additional layers of gesso with sanding in between the layers. I found this wide paint trowel that really helps spread the gesso quickly and evenly. The canvas is 24”x36”

I was delighted to come across this scene when I took an alternate route home from work. I stopped by one day and asked permission to take pictures and the owner graciously obliged. I had been wanting to paint an extra wide format, the Queen Anne's Lace flowers and the horses and this scene brought together all of those elements. The resulting painting "MB farm" is one of the entries for the Lake County Art League Fall Membership Show at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts, 39 Jack Benny Drive, Waukegan, IL 60087

Completed oil painting, signed and fresh off the easel. Getting the color and value right on the tiny fibres of the opened orange segments on the shadow side was challenging. I have added some work in progress pictures to share my process.

My plein air painting 'Boca Cola' painted at Boca De Tomatlan, Mexico will be part of the Lake County Art League’s Spring Membership Show at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts in Waukegan through May 21.
